Tobacco
Manifesto for Action
The Greater Manchester Health Commission's ‘Manifesto for Action’ recommendations are wide ranging and include the endorsement of a national consultation on the Future of Tobacco Control to:
- prevent people smoking in cars when there are children present;
- ban smoking by drivers;
- stop people smoking at outside tables where people eat;
- ban smoking in outside seats at sporting arenas;
- stop performers smoking on stage;
- asking councils to consider raising the age rating of films which push smoking using product placement;
- ban smoking on TV and ensure tobacco is only sold from licensed premises.
The Greater Manchester Health Commission encouraged the public to share their views, as part of the national consultation which finished on the 8th September 2008.
The Department of Health is consulting on the next steps in tobacco control and the further regulation of tobacco products, and to consult with stakeholders on measures to reduce the significant harm to health caused by smoking for those who are addicted to nicotine and not able to quit altogether.
