Health Commission Role

The Commission has been created to improve the health and narrow the life expectancy gap between Greater Manchester and the English average, and deliver reductions in health inequalities within the city region.

It is being set up as part of a wider response to the government's announcement of a greater role for the Manchester 'city region' in economic development and regeneration.

It is the first of several changes in the way that agencies in Greater Manchester will work together more effectively to improve the well-being of residents and communities in the region.

Agreed next steps

The Commission considered its priorities in relation to the health challenges facing Greater Manchester.

The proposed work programme will seek to respond to the major killers and key factors affecting life expectancy and health inequalities i.e. cancer, heart disease, smoking, alcohol and mental health; and the cross cutting health issues affected by City region policy development (worklessness, air quality, fuel poverty).

Key issues for the Commission can be seen under the section ‘Work Plan’
